OpenAI Acquires TBPN Tech Talk Show in Its First Media Purchase

OpenAI Acquires TBPN Tech Talk Show in Its First Media Purchase Image: Primary
OpenAI has acquired TBPN, the Technology Business Programming Network, a daily live talk show popular in Silicon Valley startup and technology circles, marking the company's first foray into media ownership, The Next Web reported. TBPN is hosted by John Coogan and Jordi Hays, both former startup founders, and has built a following among venture capitalists, founders, and technology professionals. The show will sit inside OpenAI's strategy organization and report to Chris Lehane, the company's chief global affairs officer. Financial terms were not disclosed. OpenAI said TBPN will retain its editorial independence following the acquisition -- a standard assurance in media deals that is frequently tested in practice. The move is notable as a departure from OpenAI's core focus on AI model development and enterprise software, signaling an interest in owning distribution channels and shaping technology media narratives directly. The acquisition comes as AI companies have increasingly invested in content and media strategies. Anthropic has expanded its communications team significantly, and Microsoft has deepened investments in content partnerships. Owning a media property outright is a more aggressive step. TBPN had been generating approximately $30 million in annual revenue at the time of the deal, according to prior reporting. At that revenue level, the acquisition price in the low hundreds of millions would represent a meaningful multiple for an early-stage media property, reflecting the strategic premium OpenAI placed on the distribution asset.
