U.S. weighs new export restrictions on ASML chip equipment to China
Shares of ASML, the Dutch semiconductor equipment manufacturer, declined following reports that the U.S. government is considering new export restrictions targeting the company's deep ultraviolet lithography machines.
The proposed restrictions would limit Chinese companies' access to ASML's DUV equipment, which is used to manufacture advanced semiconductors. Chinese chipmakers have so far maintained access to these machines despite earlier U.S. export controls on more advanced EUV technology.
ASML holds a near-monopoly position in the lithography equipment market, with its machines essential for producing cutting-edge chips. The company has already faced pressure from U.S. and Dutch export controls that have limited sales to China.
The potential new restrictions represent an escalation in the ongoing technology trade conflict between the U.S. and China. Chinese semiconductor companies have been working to develop domestic alternatives but remain years behind in lithography technology.
