Xcimer gains RTX backing for laser defense work

Xcimer gains RTX backing for laser defense work Image: Primary
Laser-fusion startup Xcimer announced a partnership with and investment from RTX last week, according to TechCrunch. RTX Ventures will provide funding, while RTX can explore uses for Xcimer's high-power lasers. Xcimer says its Phoenix laser system is the largest privately owned system of its kind, though it operates at roughly one-tenth the power the company says a fusion power plant would require. The arrangement links a fusion developer's laser technology to defense applications as fusion startups seek capital beyond climate-focused venture funding.
