Graphene experiment captures electron transitions with tunneling probability up to 100%

Graphene experiment captures electron transitions with tunneling probability up to 100% Image: Primary
The University of Regensburg, Philipps-Universität Marburg and Forschungszentrum Jülich captured light-driven electron transitions in graphene with a tunneling probability of up to 100% in a laboratory experiment published in Nature. The measurements required exceptionally pure, specially prepared graphene. Laser fields accelerated electrons across energy bands, the permitted ranges of electron energy. A photoemission momentum microscope recorded their energies and motion in real time. How quickly electrons approached the gap between bands determined the transitions. The measurements also captured interactions with the crystal lattice disrupting the electrons' initially orderly movement.
