Anthropic names Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar first chief global affairs officer

Anthropic named Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar its first chief global affairs officer as the Claude developer navigates policy challenges and changing regulation, Reuters reported. A company spokesperson said Cuéllar will report to President Daniela Amodei from San Francisco headquarters and manage relationships with the U.S. government and countries where Anthropic is expanding. Cuéllar, who goes by Tino, has served since January on Anthropic's Long-Term Benefit Trust and is stepping down from that independent four-person body. He is a former special assistant in the Obama White House and a former California Supreme Court justice. His leadership of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace until July included co-chairing a task force on U.S. national security and nuclear proliferation. A 2025 study co-led by Cuéllar informed California SB 53, which protects AI whistleblowers, requires high-revenue developers to report on standards and incidents, and includes a maximum $1 million fine per violation; Anthropic endorsed the bill, Reuters said. The hire comes amid a turbulent relationship with the U.S. government. Reuters reported a Pentagon blacklist Anthropic is challenging in court and a Trump administration export control directive that temporarily banned Anthropic from selling its top-shelf Mythos 5 and Fable 5 AI models to foreigners over national security concerns.
