PsiQuantum says it has been showing potential customers a prototype switch that routes light signals between GPUs without converting them into electrical signals, Yahoo reported. The device draws on optical chips developed for the company's quantum computing work. Avoiding those conversions could reduce heat and energy use in data center networking. Executive vice president Robert Soderbery said the device could connect GPUs across separate server racks with the speed and latency of connections within one rack. Those benefits remain claims for a prototype.
