DASH adapters connect da Vinci instruments to general-purpose robots

Researchers present adapters that let general-purpose robots use da Vinci Classic and Xi surgical instruments without modifying the instruments, according to an arXiv preprint. The DASH system connects the instruments to serial-link and humanoid robots, extending surgical robotics research beyond purpose-built platforms. Its two adapter types engage each instrument's native latch and wirelessly identify inserted tools, then load the corresponding motion models and mechanical coupling settings. Earlier work used handheld instruments connected through passive linkages rather than native robotic actuation. The researchers report teleoperated experiments demonstrating the adapters' effectiveness; the demonstrated scope is surgical robotics research.
