Newspaper publishers sue Brave over AI data sales and paywall access

Newspaper publishers sue Brave over AI data sales and paywall access Image: Primary
The New York Times and publishers of the New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune and Orlando Sentinel filed separate lawsuits against Brave Software in federal court in Manhattan on Monday, The Next Web reports. They allege Brave scraped their journalism and sold access to AI companies without permission. The complaints target the Brave Index and Search API, naming Anthropic, Perplexity, Mistral, xAI and Cohere as customers. They also challenge Brave's AI search responses and a Paywall blocker setting that allegedly provides subscription content without login. The three newspapers seek damages, repayment of profits and a permanent injunction. Their claims include copyright infringement and circumvention of technical protections.
