Huawei reportedly asks some AI chip customers to source restricted memory

Huawei reportedly asks some AI chip customers to source restricted memory Image: Primary
Huawei has asked some customers to source memory for its next flagship AI chip, the Ascend 960DT, The Information reported, citing customers, smugglers and others familiar with its supply chain. The chip will largely use Samsung and SK Hynix high-bandwidth memory, which U.S. export rules bar those companies from selling to China. The reported supply route attaches memory to weak processors, ships the packages under processor export codes, then removes the memory in China. Many stacks crack or warp during removal. The extent of the trade is unclear; Samsung and SK Hynix said they comply with export rules, and SK Hynix said it has not supplied Huawei since 2020.
