Ofcom investigates Meta's risk checks for Instagram Instants

Ofcom investigates Meta's risk checks for Instagram Instants Image: Primary
Ofcom opened a formal investigation Tuesday into whether Meta failed to assess Instagram Instants' risks properly before launching the feature in May. Instants lets users share posts that disappear after viewing. The UK regulator will examine legally required assessments of illegal content and risks to children. The Online Safety Act requires platforms to update risk checks before significant service changes. A breach finding could lead to compliance orders or a fine of up to £18m or 10% of qualifying worldwide revenue, whichever is greater. Meta says it conducted a risk review and briefed Ofcom several times before launch. Ofcom will gather evidence and allow Meta to respond to any provisional breach decision before issuing a final ruling.
