Researchers certify stronger error protection in modular quantum memory codes

Researchers at Peking University and Freie Universität Berlin developed a modular method for quantum memory codes that achieves a certified circuit distance of at least 48, Quantum Zeitgeist reports. Circuit distance measures protection against faults during error correction, where checking for errors can itself introduce faults. The method links a base code with amplifier codes through shared checks. Four successive amplification steps produced the certified distance while keeping check weights no greater than 14. Recursive certificates establish protection as the codes grow, reducing the difficulty of verifying larger circuits. The results establish theoretical gains; experiments have not yet fully validated the scaling benefits in a physical system.
