InstructMesh lets novices repair AI-generated designs before 3D printing

InstructMesh lets novices repair AI-generated designs before 3D printing Image: Primary
Researchers at MIT, Google and Northeastern University developed InstructMesh, an experimental interface that lets users identify and repair flaws in AI-generated 3D designs before printing them. MIT says novices identified and fixed structural problems around 90 percent of the time, as reviewed by an expert. The software pairs Microsoft's TRELLIS 3D generator with GPT-4. Users highlight parts of a design, describe changes in natural language and adjust sliders to refine geometry. Nearly 80 percent of the TRELLIS models recreated from Thingiverse examples had structural flaws. Physics simulations to assess breakage and material suitability are a possible future addition.
