EU preliminary findings challenge TikTok's recommendation design

EU preliminary findings challenge TikTok's recommendation design Image: Primary
The European Commission has preliminarily accused TikTok of violating the Digital Services Act by failing to mitigate mental health risks from its personalized video feed. Regulators say repeated interaction with triggering content can be interpreted as positive interest, exposing vulnerable adults and minors to harmful repetition. The Commission urged TikTok to give explicit user preferences more weight, stop using viewing time to recommend content, improve user controls and regularly test its algorithm. Failure to comply with the Commission's final report and recommendations could bring fines of up to 6 percent of global revenue.
