Preprint reports empirical correction of most Hubble radiation-image damage
A preprint reports that empirical fits to more than 24 years of Hubble CCD radiation-damage data can correct more than 99.5% of the damage's effect on image quality during post-processing. The authors say radiation damage varies through solar cycles but is several years out of phase with sunspots and coronal mass ejections. They found the most accurate fits used physically implausible parameters, while physically reasonable fits performed worse.
