Underwater robot maneuvers in three dimensions with two actuators

The inspiration for the robot, an actual feather star (aka crinoid) marine invertebrate Image: Primary
North Carolina State University researchers have developed an underwater robot that maneuvers in three dimensions using elastic limbs and two actuators, components that produce movement. Corresponding author Jie Yin says achieving that range of motion would normally require at least six actuators. The feather-star-inspired design uses its flexible structure to produce different movements. Activating both actuators propels it upward; activating one moves it forward or backward; alternating them rotates it. Changing the repetition speed lets it swim or hover. Carrying cameras, lifting objects and working with other aquatic robots are prospective applications.
