NASA's Roman telescope activates infrared camera

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has activated its 300-megapixel infrared camera and returned its first test image during commissioning, according to a NASA statement cited by Live Science. The Wide Field Instrument is not yet fully focused, but NASA said its systems are working as expected. Roman launched Aug. 30 and is traveling toward L2. NASA expects its images to cover an area 100 times larger than Hubble's, with first full science images planned for early 2027.
