Microsoft has implemented a temporary fast-track process to help developers regain access to Windows Hardware Program accounts that were recently suspended without warning, affecting tools like WireGuard, VeraCrypt, MemTest86, and Windscribe. The suspensions prevented developers from releasing new Windows builds and security patches, raising concerns about potential delays in addressing vulnerabilities. Developers reported being locked out of their accounts while facing lengthy or unclear appeals processes, with VeraCrypt developer Mounir Idrassi stating his account was terminated without warning and he was unable to reach human support. Similar experiences were shared Microsoft Vice President Scott Hanselman explained the accounts were suspended for failing to complete identity verification requirements that the company says it has been emailing partners about since October 2025. The verification is required because the program allows distribution of kernel-level drivers, which run with high privileges and have been abused Under the new accelerated reinstatement process, developers can open a support case through the Hardware Program with a business justification explaining how access will be used. Microsoft has also addressed reported issues with the support workflow and provided alternative contact methods for those unable to submit standard requests. The company has not specified how long the temporary process will remain in effect, advising affected developers to act quickly while it's available.
