An analysis of more than 116,000 passerine bird songs published in Science found that the variety of birdsong is built from eight basic acoustic motifs shaped by local environments, Science Magazine posted on X on Aug. 2.
The study identified motifs such as trills, whistles and harmonic notes as the building blocks of passerine song diversity. Researchers also determined that local environments greatly influence how birds communicate globally.
