UChicago-led team shows non-Abelian anyons support a universal quantum gate set

Researchers from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, Harvard, Stony Brook University and Quantinuum report the first demonstration that braiding and fusing non-Abelian anyons can support a universal set of quantum operations, according to SciTechDaily coverage of a Nature study. A quantum computer is broadly useful only when it can run arbitrary computations rather than a narrow task set. The team constructed and tested a complete computational toolkit based on non-Abelian anyons and said the experiments show this approach can support universal quantum operations. UChicago PME assistant professor Ruben Verresen, a co-author, said that if information is stored in these emergent quasiparticles and they are moved around, any desired quantum computation can be performed. Quantinuum's Henrik Dreyer, managing director and scientific lead at the company's Munich office and a co-author, called non-Abelian codes a dark horse in quantum error correction and said the work is the first universal gate set in a non-Abelian code. The writeup links the result to fault-tolerant computing that could, in principle, avoid magic state distillation or cultivation, which Dreyer described as among the most expensive operations in standard error-correction codes. Conventional protection often cannot run every required operation directly on encoded information without those extra resources. Verresen said the result is still more like a proof of principle and that the next challenge is combining the method with active error correction.
