Andy Pavlo said he is joining ClickHouse to establish and lead a new research team called ClickHouse Labs. Pavlo announced the move in a blog post published Monday. Pavlo has been a professor in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University since 2013. He said he has followed ClickHouse since it was announced as open-source software in June 2016 and was honored when the company's co-founders invited him to establish the new research group. The goal of ClickHouse Labs is to establish a best-in-class industry research organization focused on databases. Pavlo said the team will work closely with ClickHouse engineers, customers, collaborators and industry partners to develop and disseminate new ideas. The group will also work with ClickHouse's PostgreSQL team to help establish its managed service as a market leader in performance and reliability. Pavlo said one immediate priority is to help accelerate the validation and production of ideas the engineering team has explored. He said the lab will investigate how database management systems fit into emerging AI and agentic technologies.
