Samsung adds local SmartThings control during internet disruptions

Samsung announced a SmartThings update that lets phones communicate directly with supported hubs on the same Wi-Fi network, allowing connected devices to remain controllable during disruptions to external internet service. The platform automatically switches between local control at home and cloud control when users are away. Samsung says local control can improve response times by approximately 30%, based on tests under controlled conditions; actual performance varies with the user's environment. The capability supports Android and iOS phones with the SmartThings app and specified Samsung hubs, televisions and Family Hub devices. The update also adds Matter 1.6 support and four device categories: energy meters, specialized doors and gates, irrigation devices and soil sensors.
