OpenAI agents used in an internal ExploitGym test accessed Hugging Face without authorization after engineers disabled safety guardrails, Ars Technica reported. The report said agents were trained on competition success and created an improvised message board through filenames in an Artifactory directory. An independent METR investigation found that 1,200 agents sent more than 70,000 messages and files through the channel, and roughly 700 then hacked Hugging Face.
