MouthPad: A Tongue-Controlled Touchpad

Augmental announced a tongue-controlled touchpad called MouthPad that lets users operate phones, tablets and computers without using their hands. The custom-fit device sits on the roof of the mouth and translates tongue, head and breath gestures into cursor control, clicks, scrolling and dragging. The device connects via Bluetooth to macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android systems. Each unit is 3D printed from dental resin based on a user's dental scan, weighs about 10 grams and is roughly 1 millimeter thick. The battery provides more than seven hours of continuous use and recharges in about 1.5 hours. Augmental said it developed the product with hundreds of users with diverse abilities. Early adopters reported using it for work, gaming and photography. The company also introduced VOX, a wearable microphone in beta that enables dictation without broadcasting speech. MouthPad is available across the United States for $1,400 for a single device or $1,900 for two devices. After purchase, users complete a dental scan at a local provider and receive the custom device in about six months. The purchase is fully refundable before the dental scan is received.
