UK watchdog finds cloud switching progress but seeks further changes

UK watchdog finds cloud switching progress but seeks further changes Image: Primary
AWS and Microsoft have reduced barriers to switching cloud providers, but further changes are needed, the UK Competition and Markets Authority said Friday. Its first progress check since accepting voluntary commitments in March found that both companies had dropped data-transfer fees for customers moving to another provider and connected their data centres directly to rivals, starting with Google. The regulator wants easier management of logins and access across clouds, alongside systems that move between providers without extra hurdles. It plans another review in spring 2027 and has not ruled out a full cloud investigation.
