HCA nurses allege Palantir-based scheduling tool disrupts staffing and care

HCA nurses allege Palantir-based scheduling tool disrupts staffing and care Image: Primary
Nurses at HCA Healthcare allege that its Palantir-based scheduling tool leaves shifts understaffed or short of experienced nurses and overrides scheduling preferences, WIRED reported after interviewing six nurses. HCA has deployed Timpani at roughly 130 of its 190 locations since 2023. The tool forecasts patient volumes and staffing needs to generate schedules. Nurses say appeals now go to a centralized headquarters team, limiting opportunities to explain problems, and that correcting assignments consumes more time. HCA says nursing leaders make final scheduling decisions and disputes that the tool is designed to reduce staffing at patients' expense. The company says it continues to improve Timpani based on nurses' feedback.
