IonQ reports quantum memory link exceeding 1,000 connections per second

IonQ says hardware testing demonstrated a photonic link generating more than 1,000 quantum entanglement events per second between a trapped ion qubit and a silicon vacancy quantum memory. Entanglement creates quantum connections between the two systems, a building block for distributed quantum computing. The company reports a rate more than four times faster than the previous trapped-ion record held by co-founder Chris Monroe's research group. Technical details appear in an arXiv preprint. IonQ says the rate can support distributed quantum applications; the demonstrated result is an end-to-end hardware link.
