Apple's new Mac mini removes replaceable internal storage
Image: Primary Apple's M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini models have returned to storage chips soldered directly to the logic board, eliminating the removable SSD module found in the M4 generation, hardware vendor Expand Mac mini reported after testing production hardware. The change prevents the company's existing aftermarket modules from supporting the new machines.
Expand Mac mini sells a 1TB M4 module for $300 and a 2TB module for $420. Apple charges $500 to configure the M6 Mac mini from 256GB to 1TB and $1,000 for 2TB. Apple's repair guide still depicts removable storage in the Mac Studio, but teardowns had not confirmed that design.
