ABC tells Australian inquiry AI firms likely used its content for training

ABC tells Australian inquiry AI firms likely used its content for training Image: Primary
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation told a parliamentary AI inquiry on Tuesday that AI companies probably used its content to train models, while acknowledging it lacked conclusive evidence of scraping. Its head of content and legal operations, Kate Gilchrist, said companies could license the broadcaster's work under existing copyright law. Gilchrist opposed a model allowing training unless rights holders opt out, arguing that the ABC could not search the whole web to register objections. ABC and SBS also sought payment for Australian news in written submissions. OpenAI and Anthropic appeared before the same committee later that day and sought looser copyright rules for training on local content, Reuters reported.
