Android Auto: Gemini replaces Google Assistant
Image: Primary Google is rolling out its Gemini AI assistant to Android Auto, replacing Google Assistant in the vehicle infotainment system, the company announced. The rollout began recently for some users, including beta testers in Germany, according to reports on Reddit and 9to5Google. Google had promised the integration at its I/O developer conference in May. The switch occurs server-side and does not require an app update, though Android Auto versions 15.6 or 15.7 are needed. Users can identify the change by a new voice and animations. Gemini enables natural language interaction and links with apps such as Google Home, Keep and Maps. It can translate messages and supports Gemini Live for conversational queries. The ability to use nicknames for contacts appears to have been lost in the transition. Google plans to phase out Google Assistant across its ecosystem by the end of the year, though the assistant will remain in smart homes outside the U.S. until Gemini rolls out in the Home app in 2026. Android Automotive vehicles with Google Built-in will receive the update later.
