Draft EU Kids Act would impose age-based access rules across online services
Image: Primary A European Commission draft presented last week would establish age-based access rules and safety requirements for social media, video-sharing services, online games, AI companions, chatbots and app stores. Accounts would be unavailable to children under 13 on covered social and video platforms, restricted under parental supervision from 13 to 15, and subject to safety-by-design rules from 15 to 18.
The proposal would rely on age assurance and require child-safe defaults unless a provider establishes that a user is an adult. It exempts specified nonprofit, scientific, educational and open-source services, but provides no general exception for small and midsize businesses.
