Google expanded Android earthquake alerts from 98 regions to more than 200 on Thursday, including Panama and Guatemala, 9to5Google reported. The system uses smartphone sensors to detect early earthquake signals and warn users before destructive shaking arrives. Google also outlined changes to its "Be Ready" alert for stronger shaking. In the coming months, it will add a map showing the detected shaking area, estimated magnitude, recommended actions and a button for further earthquake information. Google says the system has sent over a billion alerts since its 2021 launch; the expanded regional coverage takes effect today, while the alert redesign follows later.
