Huawei limits next-generation Ascend AI chips to China
Image: Primary Huawei will keep its next-generation Ascend 900-series AI accelerators primarily in China because production capacity cannot satisfy domestic demand, rotating chairman Eric Xu said. The company will supply limited volumes to some countries but does not plan a full international expansion.
Huawei also outlined Ascend 960, 970 and 980 processors extending through 2029. Its strategy uses clusters of as many as 15,488 chips to compensate for weaker chip-level performance, but the resulting systems are expected to consume substantially more power than Nvidia alternatives. Manufacturing constraints at SMIC continue to limit Huawei's supply.
