IBM details mainframe processor design supporting Arm and z/Architecture
Image: Primary IBM has revealed a next-generation z/Architecture processor design that supports both the z/Architecture and Arm instruction sets. IBM executives said the design uses separate decoders for the two architectures while sharing major structures including caches, translation lookaside buffers and physical register files. The company said the Arm support is intended to bring Arm software closer to enterprise data and transactions, including in LinuxONE consolidation projects. IBM also described plans for a next-generation Spyre accelerator with high-bandwidth memory.
