September Windows updates can stop File History backups
Image: Primary Microsoft has warned that September 2026 Windows security updates can prevent File History from creating or updating backups on some systems. Affected computers may log crashes involving FileHistory.exe and KERNELBASE.dll, show an incorrect "Reconnect your drive" message, retain an old last-backup timestamp or report that previously backed-up files have no earlier version.
The issue affects Windows 10 21H2 and later, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2016 and 2019, and Windows 11 23H2 and later. Microsoft was still working on a fix, after separate emergency updates addressed other problems caused by the month's patches.
