Reddit plans login requirement, starting with tests outside the US

Reddit plans to require users to log in to browse, CEO Steve Huffman said alongside its third-quarter earnings. Tests will begin in select markets outside the US in the coming months, with no definitive timeline for a rollout to all users. Huffman said most unauthorized access occurs through logged-out browsing and argued that requiring login would protect Reddit's data and improve ad relevance. Reddit will continue licensing its data to companies. The announcement follows a decline in search traffic: Huffman said October referrals had dropped by more than 1 million on average per week. Reddit has not settled how the site will work for logged-out visitors.
