Prototype guidance system improves object retrieval for blind users in small study

Researchers report that Touvigation, a hands-free prototype for helping blind and low-vision people retrieve objects indoors, completed every task in a 12-person evaluation. A multimodal large-language-model assistant succeeded on 58% of tasks, while unassisted searches succeeded on 85%. The system combines vision-language recognition with a persistent local map, then changes its body-relative instructions as a user turns, walks, reaches and verifies an object by touch. The results are presented in an arXiv preprint, and the small participant group limits conclusions about performance in wider settings.
