France's data protection authority, CNIL, has fined electronics retailer Fnac Darty €7 million for using third-party trackers in its mobile app without users' consent, according to complainant noyb. CNIL found that a tracker collected browsing history to display product recommendations and train the retailer's recommendation algorithm. The authority confirmed that Fnac Darty tracked users without obtaining consent and reiterated that processing personal data for targeted advertising requires consent. The decision follows a noyb complaint filed in September 2023 and a CNIL investigation launched in March 2024. Fnac Darty faces a daily penalty of €10,000 if it fails to comply with the decision.
