OpenAI is still working on that 'super app'
Image: Primary OpenAI plans to introduce a revamped ChatGPT service in the coming weeks that operates as a super app equipped with coding tools and AI agents. The Financial Times reported the planned release. The effort targets stronger competition with Anthropic among business customers while advancing toward profitability ahead of an initial public offering.
The approach would convert ChatGPT into an entry point that channels free users toward paid offerings such as the Codex coding product. A senior OpenAI employee told the Financial Times that Chat is dead. Thibault Sottiaux, who leads OpenAI's core product and platform, said the company is developing a personal agent to provide help across personal and professional areas of life.
Plans for a super app have appeared in reports since last year. The Wall Street Journal reported in March that the plans signal a strategy change following the launch of various standalone products in 2025. OpenAI executives indicated they are dropping side quests including the Sora video generator.
