ORNL, IBM and AMD deploy platform for quantum error correction research

IBM says it has deployed a quantum error correction research platform with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and AMD at its Poughkeepsie, New York site. The platform pairs IBM Nighthawk r2 quantum processors with ORNL's Umbra computing system, which uses AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs and 5th Gen AMD EPYC CPUs. Putting the systems together reduces delays between quantum measurements and the classical software that identifies qubit errors. Researchers can develop and test these error decoders and hybrid computing workflows without assembling the infrastructure themselves. The platform supports experiments intended to inform future fault-tolerant machines; IBM plans to deliver its Starling system by 2029.
