Specific Biologics closes US$35 million round for ALS gene-editing therapy Image: Primary
Specific Biologics announced the closing of a US$35 million Series A financing led by Hatteras Venture Partners. The company plans to use the proceeds to advance its lead gene-editing candidate through initial clinical biomarker proof-of-concept in the first cohort of an adaptive Phase I/II trial for C9ORF72-associated ALS. Its Dualase platform is designed to remove disease-causing DNA repeat expansions while preserving normal sequences. The lead candidate fits within a single adeno-associated virus for delivery to the central nervous system. The company reported editing results in patient-derived cell models and animals; those findings do not establish benefit in patients.
