UK competition regulator proposes search and AI assistant choice rules

The UK Competition and Markets Authority has proposed rules that would require Google and Android phone makers to offer users a choice of search services when they first use a device and through yearly prompts. The proposal would also require smartphone makers to give users a choice of AI assistants. If adopted, the choice requirements would give rival search and AI assistant providers more opportunities to reach smartphone users. The requirements are proposals; the account does not describe them as rules already in force.
