Karman says JPL selected it to develop SkyFall parachute deployment system Image: Primary
Karman Space & Defense said NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory selected it to design and develop the parachute deployment system for the SkyFall Mars mission. The award is Karman's first assignment to fully design and develop a system specifically for a Mars mission. The device, called a mortar, will deploy a parachute during atmospheric entry to slow the spacecraft before it releases three helicopters. The rotorcraft will carry JPL-designed ground-penetrating radar to investigate shallow subsurface ice and study Martian weather. NASA is targeting a November 2028 launch window.
