Meta plans 1-petabit transatlantic cable using dual-core fiber
Image: Primary Meta announced Petal, a planned 7,000-kilometer subsea cable between France and the United States that it expects to enter service in 2029 with 1 petabit-per-second capacity. NEC will manufacture and install the system, Sumitomo Electric Industries will supply its dual-core fiber, and Orange is supporting the French landing.
Petal will place two optical cores inside each fiber in a 24-pair system, providing the equivalent of 48 conventional fiber pairs. Meta says this will double the capacity of its Anjana cable without a proportional increase in power and remain within existing 18-kilovolt power-equipment limits. The system is announced but not yet operating.
