OpenAI starts program to arrange electricity curtailment at future compute campuses

OpenAI starts program to arrange electricity curtailment at future compute campuses Image: Primary
OpenAI launched its Grid Protectors Program on November 2 to arrange reductions in electricity demand at future compute campuses when grids face strain. The planned Effingham County campus in Georgia will serve as the pilot, using an existing agreement providing up to 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response. The company said local arrangements will specify how much demand utilities can reduce, how quickly and for how long. Depending on equipment and local needs, campuses could also supply power from on-site generation or storage. The Georgia campus remains in development, with contracted power due in phases between 2028 and 2032; OpenAI said flexibility cannot replace new energy supply and transmission.
