EU Commission to examine supermarket defenses after cooling-system attacks

EU Commission to examine supermarket defenses after cooling-system attacks Image: Primary
The European Commission will examine supermarket cyber defenses after cooling systems failed at dozens of stores across at least six EU countries this week, Politico reported. Its Security College will assess retailers' backup arrangements and their ability to respond to disruptions; no meeting date has been set. Sabcobel, which supplies cooling systems to Delhaize and other retailers, said attackers switched refrigeration units into defrost mode. Its chief executive said technicians disconnected affected units from the network and warned that protecting older fridges would require physical hardware changes and additional investment. No group has claimed responsibility, and no suspects have been identified. Agriculture commissioner Christophe Hansen said Europe's food security was not under threat.
