Google's Biggest Announcements of 2026: Gemini, Android 17, and More

Google said its 2026 product strategy centers on integrating the Gemini artificial intelligence model across Search, Android, Workspace, Chrome, Pixel devices and Google Cloud. The company introduced Gemini 3.1 Pro in February and followed with the Gemini 3.5 family at its I/O conference in May, adding built-in computer-use capabilities in June. Google also launched Gemini Omni, a multimodal model for text, images, audio and video. Google Search has shifted toward AI-generated answers and conversational follow-up, with the company saying in May that AI Mode had surpassed 1 billion monthly active users. Google began rolling out Android 17 to supported Pixel devices on June 16, adding floating Bubbles for multitasking, gaming optimizations for foldable devices and theft-protection features. The update will reach other manufacturers throughout 2026 on vendor schedules. Google expanded Gemini across Workspace applications including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive and Meet, adding conversational voice tools, an AI image application called Google Pics and a personal agent named Gemini Spark. The company confirmed the Pixel 11 ahead of a Made by Google event on Aug. 12 while delivering March and June Pixel Drops with expanded Circle to Search, AI-assisted media creation and emergency notifications. IT teams should test managed applications and security controls before approving a broader Android 17 rollout. Organizations will need clear policies around data access, human review, permissions, compliance and licensing for the new Workspace capabilities.
