Netflix launches Playground, standalone gaming app for children under eight
Image: Primary Netflix released Playground on Monday, a dedicated mobile gaming application targeting children aged eight and under, expanding the streaming company's interactive entertainment offerings in six initial markets. The free app, available to all Netflix subscribers regardless of plan tier, features curated games based on licensed children's properties including Peppa Pig and other Netflix-owned or partnered intellectual property. The launch represents Netflix's most significant dedicated gaming product for younger audiences since introducing mobile games to its main platform in 2021. Playground is available in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Philippines, and New Zealand, with additional market rollouts planned. Parental controls include time limits and content filtering, with Netflix emphasizing the app's absence of advertising and in-app purchases. The standalone application architecture allows children to access age-appropriate content without navigating the main Netflix interface. Industry analysts view the launch as part of Netflix's broader strategy to increase engagement hours and justify subscription pricing through diversified content formats beyond video streaming.
