Samsung Electronics and SK hynix plan to add at least two semiconductor fabs in South Korea's Honam region by 2040, according to industry sources cited by Seoul Economic Daily. The companies had previously planned four fabs in the region, and the additional facilities were included in a government power-demand reassessment, the report said. The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment now forecasts peak 2040 electricity demand of as much as 165 GW, with advanced industries and AI data centers a major source of the increase.
