Intel has signed on to help design and build Elon Musk's Terafab semiconductor facility in Austin, Texas, providing crucial manufacturing expertise for the ambitious AI chip project. The partnership gives Musk access to Intel's fabrication capabilities as he pursues plans to build AI chips for Tesla and SpaceX. Musk has publicly expressed frustration with the limited capacity of existing chip manufacturers to meet surging AI demand. Terafab aims to produce one terawatt of compute capacity annually to support advances in artificial intelligence and robotics. The facility will supply chips for Tesla's self-driving vehicles, humanoid robots, and SpaceX's planned orbital data centers. Intel currently operates two fabs in Arizona as part of a $20 billion domestic expansion. The company has struggled financially in recent years but retains substantial semiconductor manufacturing expertise. The Musk partnership could provide significant revenue as Intel pursues its own turnaround. The deal highlights the intense demand for domestic AI chip manufacturing capacity. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is also expanding in Arizona with plans for up to 12 advanced semiconductor plants. SpaceX, which recently merged with Musk's xAI artificial intelligence company, plans an initial public offering later this year. The chip factory partnership provides vertical integration for AI infrastructure needs across Musk's companies. Intel stated its ability to design, fabricate, and package high-performance chips at scale will help accelerate Terafab's production timeline. Neither company disclosed financial terms or construction schedules.
